Language of the Arctic Tern
May 19, 2021Arctic Terns migrate further than any other birds, going from the Arctic to the Antarctic.
They breed on the coast and the Tundra.
The female will call for a mate, a mate will arrive with a fish to show he can provide. If the female accepts, she is trusting he will be a good provider and they will make a nest together and raise the young.
They forage by flying slowly upwind, hover briefly and then plunge to catch prey below the water’s surface. They eat fish, crustaceans and insects. Ålso known to eat mollusks, marine worms, earthworms but rarely berries.
I love watching this mating ritual every spring, their dipping and diving to catch fish ect. and then seeing the young chicks in turn calling for food. A beautiful bird to watch.
